This is the ADAM (Androgen Deficiency in the Aging Male) questionnaire from St. Louis University. Notice the NOTE at the bottom. Although this is designed for the Aging Male (age 40 or greater), I have found it to be accurate in younger men as well.

If you answer these questions and meet the criteria in the NOTE, you have a testosterone level that is suboptimal for YOU. It may not meet the insurance criteria or many doctors idea of how low testosterone is diagnosed.

If you’ve read some of my other answers about hormones, you will recall that most people get symptoms of inadequate hormone levels significantly prior to when their levels have reached the lower end of “normal” in the lab reference range.

Hormones are messengers. They don’t “do” anything. They merely message your body receptors, specific to that hormone, so that you are maintaining your homeostasis at peak efficiency.

I have treated and consulted with many, many men and women who were told their hormone levels were “normal” despite having a myriad of symptoms related to suboptimal levels of that hormone.

Each person has an optimal level for hormone concentrations and if someone pays attention to what you’re saying, they can figure out what that level is for you. This is true of testosterone, DHEA-S, estradiol, progesterone, TSH and freeT3 to name a few.

If you are symptomatic but your testosterone level is “normal”, that does not mean it is optimal. At least not for you. You can find doctors that understand this but most don’t. Find a good Functional Medicine doctor. If you can’t, I can consult with you and find you one.

Life is too short to feel “off balance” while you’re still young. It’s bad enough when you get older. The message here is that there are professional that will help you. You just have to find one.
